How much baseboard do I need?

Measure the room's perimeter, take out the door openings and add 10%. The offcut at a doorway rarely fits the next wall.

Do I need shoe moulding?

Only if the new floor leaves a gap the baseboard doesn't cover, or the old base is staying. It's a small bead that hides the expansion gap a floating floor needs.

Primed or unfinished?

Primed saves a coat and shows defects before they're painted. Unfinished is for stain, or for a painter who wants to prime their own way.

MDF takes paint better than pine, stays straight and costs less, but it hates water. Keep it out of bathrooms and laundry rooms, and use pine there.

Taller baseboard covers more of the gap a new floor leaves and suits a higher ceiling. A flat profile matches slim shaker doors; a colonial profile suits an older house.
